Grant Overview

Colorado's Initiative for Clinical Trial Awareness

In Colorado, there exists a significant barrier to participation in clinical trials due to a lack of awareness and accessibility. According to the Colorado Cancer Coalition, not only do many residents lack knowledge about clinical trial options, but 70% of eligible patients in rural areas are unaware that they can participate in such trials. This gap in knowledge, particularly in communities beyond the Denver metropolitan area, poses a challenge in harnessing the full potential of clinical research.

Residents facing this barrier vary widelyfrom individuals in Denver to those in remote mountain towns such as Alamosa. The latter, while only a few hours from the state's capital, is classified as a health professional shortage area, making access to clinical trials even more complicated for its residents. With a health-conscious population interested in exploring novel treatment paths, the lack of knowledge about clinical trials can lead to missed opportunities for both patients and researchers.

The proposal seeks to fund a statewide campaign aimed explicitly at increasing awareness of clinical trials. This initiative will involve informative seminars and social media engagement tailored both to the urban population in cities like Boulder and rural communities throughout the state. By actively promoting the benefits and opportunities of participating in clinical trials, Colorado can enhance patient recruitment, leading to better research outcomes and more relevant data for the state’s diverse residents.

Given Colorado’s emphasis on health innovation and access to cutting-edge medical treatments, the funding will support efforts to reach various stakeholders, including healthcare providers, local organizations, and community leaders. By increasing awareness and participation in clinical trials, the initiative acknowledges the unique demographic and geographic challenges faced by Coloradans, especially those in less populated regions.

By implementing this campaign, Colorado is positioned to not only improve the state’s clinical trial participation rates but also ensure that vital health innovations reach the populations that need them most, paving the way for improved health outcomes across the board.
